Image of the City

On 10-11th May 2010, the Cultural Contact Point of Slovakia is organizing the conference „Image of the City“. More than 50 years after the legendary book of Kevin Lynch, the cities overcome immense process of transformation, which heavily influenced their identities and city images. Many examples of creative effort have been shown in recent years and many cities achieved remarkable results in terms of their marketing, presentation and visual imagery. The conference Image of The City would like to focus on the role of today’s cities as centres of production, culture or thinking. Spectra, Centre of Excellence will be represented by Matej Jaššo´s contribution on Urban Semiotics. The entire event is devoted to the 25th anniversary of European Capital of Culture. The City of Bratislava and Spectra, Centre of Excellence organised on 8th November a local conference within the European research project POLYCE.

The aim of the event was to bring together local and regional stakeholders in order to discuss about preliminary project results and strategies developed for the city of Bratislava. Among the audience there were representatives of the city of Bratislava, municipalities, spatial planning research bodies and business related to spatial development.

URBAN SAFETY CENTRE

Urban safety as an environmental quality - addresses not only physical but also psychological importance of safety for humans in the urban environment. In recent project URBAN SAFETY AS ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY, developed in the collaboration with Government council for Crime Prevention and District authority in Trenčín, a unique methodology for the assessment of urban safety with special focus on environmental safety in Slovak conditions is currently being designed in the whole complexity.

International exhibition and conference LAND-URBIA in Nitra

Spectra, Centre of Excellence was one of the co-organizers of the international exhibition and conference LAND-URBIA in Nitra (18th-21st April 2013). The main philosophy of the event might be expressed by the motto “Planning Toward Identity”, which comprises under one headline various aspects of the regional identity preservation and development. Maintaining and further development of regional identity of the landscape and cities is one of the fundamental precondition for securing the sustainability as well as the identification of the people with the lived space. Pressure of various interest groups, quick benefit oriented developers and lack of public involvement might be detrimental for the identity of our spaces.

Urban Resilience

Acceleration of the spatial development has generated an increased probability of having to face negative effects of globalisation as well as EU integration. Recent economic and financial crisis highlighted this risk and created threats which were not acute some years ago. Fragile spatial and societal structures have been exposed to huge pressure originated either from international markets, unfavourable demographic prognosis, environmental hazards or other sources of risk. Urban resilience is the ability of cities and municipalities to absorb, cope and overcome these setbacks.

SPECTRA CE EU in the United Nation

On April 27th,  016 presented prof. Maros Finka, director of the SPECTRA CE EU at the Slovak University in Bratislava in the United Nation Organization headquarter in New York his statement on report of the Policy Unit 9 Urban services and technologies. His presentation got very positive reaction in the frame of Open-ended consultative meetings to the preparation of the UNO World Conference HABITAT  III held in Quito, Equator.
